LONDON/BIRMINGHAM – As reported by the General Dental Council, a UK dentist has been suspended by the authorities for conducting an intimate examination on a woman and for offering to perform female circumcision, an illegal procedure also known as female genital mutilation that involves partial or total removal of the external female genitalia, upon two children.
On 27 August, Omar Sheikh Mohamed Addow, a registered dentist from Birmingham was summoned to appear before the council’s Professional Conduct Committee, which found that Addow’s actions breached fundamental tenets of the profession and amounted to misconduct.
According to the court documents, the dentist met with a woman, who subsequently identified herself as an undercover journalist, at his practice in April and examined her breasts, abdomen and vagina, despite not being registered as a doctor with the General Medical Council, which is mandatory by law. After the examination, the dentist allegedly offered to perform female circumcision upon two children. The committee found that the man had considerable knowledge of the procedure and possessed equipment for carrying it out.
The authorities suspended Addow immediately and stated that his name will be removed from the register in 28 days’ time unless he exercised his right of appeal.
